Welcome back the 25th Anniversary Edition. This is the second year in a series where we highlight the 25th anniversary of some of our favorite things. These include movies, TV shows, video games, comics and music. This year we are celebrating the year of 1990, the first year of the decade of the 90s. A lot of big things debuted or made a huge impact that year and so we will highlight some of those in this series.
To kick things off like we did last year, we will look at music that debuted in 1990. There was some great music that was released during that year. Can you guess what song lasted the longest at #1 in the Top 100 that year? It was actually a tie. There were 3 songs that lasted 4 weeks at #1. There was Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U”, Mariah Carey’s “Vision of Love”, and Stevie B.’s “Because I Love You (The Postman Song). Some other #1 songs that year included Madonna’s “Vogue”, Wilson Phillips “Hold On” and Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby”.
What artist had the most #1 singles in 1990? There was a tie again. There were actually only 3 artists that had multiple #1 singles. Those were Carey (the other being “Love Takes Time”) Wilson Phillips (the other being “Release Me”) and Janet Jackson (“Escapade” and “Black Cat”, both of those songs off an album that was released in 1989).
What are some other big songs that came out of 1990? Some big ones include “Thunderstruck” by AC/DC, “Blaze of Glory” by Bon Jovi, “Friends in Low Places” by Garth Brooks, “Get Up! (Before The Night Is Over)” by Technotronic, “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)” by C+C Music Factory, “Hard to Handle” by the Black Crowes, “It Must Have Been Love” by Roxanne and “U Can’t Tough This” by M.C. Hammer.
What artists debuted in 1990? One major band that debuted was Pearl Jam. The grunge band played their first official show in Seattle in 1990. It would not be until the following year that their debut album would be released (so have to wait for next year to talk more about that). Another artist is Mariah Carey. I talked earlier about her having multiple hit singles in 1990 and her self-titled debut album was released in June of 1990. It sold 9 million copies in the U.S. and 15 million worldwide.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame had some huge inductions in 1990. The artists inducted that year included The Four Seasons, The Four Tops, Bobby Darin, Simon and Garfunkel and The Who.
1990 was a pretty big year when it comes to music. Is there a song or album not listed that came from 1990 that you enjoy? Leave a comment and share them here. Next time, we will look at video games from 1990. Until then, put in an old cassette tape (or CD) and rock out to some tunes.
