Sunday Devotional: 1 Thessalonians 2:9-12

“For you remember, brothers, our labor and toil: we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, while we proclaimed to you the gospel of God.  You are witnesses, and God also, how holy and righteous and blameless was our conduct toward you believers.  For you know how, like a father with his children,  we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.”  (1 Thessalonians 2:9-12)

Paul loved the Thessalonians.  The brief time he was in the city, he worked hard and loved on the people there.  They bore witness to the work that Paul and Silas did in sharing the Good News and making disciples.  And he wanted them to follow in his footsteps.  He cared for them like a father to his children.

Let us this week care for those around us like that.  Let us work hard and love on the people around us.  Let us share the Good News and be about making disciples and encouraging others to do the same.

Thursday Quote Day: Dan Kimball

For this week’s “Thursday Quote Day” here is another quote from pastor and author Dan Kimball:

“The church isn’t successful if decisions for Jesus are made. The church is successful if disciples of Jesus are made.” (Dan Kimball Adventures in Churchland)

Sunday Devotional: Luke 6:46-49

“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?  Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like:  he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.  But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”  Luke 6:46-49

Something I heard once that has stuck with me and I say a lot now is that “A disciple is one that hears from the Lord and does what he says.”  Jesus is speaking here about that.  He gives a parable about one who builds his house upon the rock.  He is the one who hears from God and does what He says.  The one who hears and doesn’t do is the man who’s house is not built upon a strong foundation.  The words that God speaks is that foundation to live our lives on.  And a great way He speaks to us is through His Word, the Bible.  As we read and meditate on His Word, we learn and grow and can then share what we learn with others.

This week, continue to build on the foundation of the rock.  Read the Bible, pray and share what God is teaching you with others.
